RN OBGYN

Position Description

Role and Responsibilities 

  1. Obtains patient consent for care and ensures patient confidentiality. Obtains and documents health history, information on chief complaints, vital signs, and health risk factors and assesses disease condition.

Provides patient care based on practice guidelines, standards of care, and federal/state laws and regulations. 

  1. Executes prescribed treatments and medical interventions, administers prescribed medications, and monitors and documents treatment progress and patient response. Delegates as allowed under the Nurse

Practice Act. Refers to/consults with physicians, other health providers, and community resources to prevent/resolve problems or concerns. Educates patients and families about health status, health maintenance, and management of acute and chronic conditions. 

  1. Documents patient assessment and intervention data using MWH electronic medical records system.

Tracks quality assurance data and monitors for acute and chronic care management. Provides reports to patients, as needed, on exam results and other follow-up information. 

  1. Participates in clinic-wide processes to improve patient care processes and outcomes. Tracks quality assurance data and monitors for acute and chronic care management.
  2. Triages patients, assessing acuity of patient concerns and medical complaints, offering medical advice as per nursing standards/limitations. Will interact with patients at the clinic, over the phone and by internet communications.
  3. Assists providers during procedures.
  4. Working with other Registered Nurses, maintains appropriate inventory of medical supplies for efficient clinic operation. Includes assessing current inventory and ordering supplies when needed.
  5. When necessary, will perform simple blood draws on patients.

Qualifications and Education Requirements 

  1. Completion of nursing training from an accredited school of nursing.
  2. Attainment of or eligibility for Registered Nursing license.
  3. Clinical OBGYN or L & D nursing experience.
  4. Current CPR certification.

  1. Knowledge of nursing processes; health care systems, structure, and functions; and community resources.

Understanding of health care technology, equipment, and supplies. Familiarity with state law on nursing care, nurse practice guidelines, and clinic policies and procedures. 

  1. Knowledge of wellness/illness, growth and development, human behavior, psychosocial factors, and alternative health care treatments.
  2. Knowledge of chart/medical record documentation requirements and federal/state laws related to release of health care information.

Skills 

  1. Skill in time management, problem solving, multitasking, prioritizing, and medical care coordination.
  2. Skill in initiating appropriate crisis interventions and emergency response.
  3. Skill in patient triage in person and on the phone.

Abilities 

  1. Ability to analyze options and then counsel patients and families about choices and make referrals to other providers and resources.
  2. Ability to engage clients and families in the development and implementation of a care plan.
  3. Ability to read and interpret physicians’ orders and notes from other providers.
  4. Ability to calculate and administer drug dosages and injections and measure results.

Equipment Operated 

Standard nursing equipment and supplies including thermometer, syringes, fetal heart monitors and procedure equipment. May involve use of assistive devices such as walkers, wheelchairs, and oxygen tanks. Significant use of computers and other electronic equipment (phones, copiers, fax machines) is required. 

Work Environment 

Medical exam/treatment rooms and medical offices. Controlled lighting, acoustics, air quality, and temperature settings. Environmental hazards may be unpredictable including exposure to communicable diseases and biohazards. 

Mental/Physical Requirements 

Involves standing, walking, bending, grasping, manipulating, and squatting. Occasional need to lift patient during transfer/turn process with or without assistance. Stress can be triggered by workload and complex cases.

CMA/MA/CNA/ or EMT

Role and Responsibilities

1. Fulfills patient care responsibilities as assigned that may include checking schedules and organizing patient flow; accompanying patients to exam/procedure room; assisting patients as needed with walking transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, etc.; collecting patient history; performing screenings per provider guidelines; assisting physicians/nurses with various procedures; charting; relaying instructions to patients/families; answering calls, and providing pertinent information.

2. Fulfills clerical responsibilities as assigned that may include sending/receiving patient medical records; obtaining lab/X-ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc.; completing forms/requisitions as needed; scheduling appointments; verifying insurance coverage and patient demographics; managing and updating EMR to ensure that information is complete and filed appropriately.

3. Fulfills environmental responsibilities as assigned that may include setting up instruments and equipment according to department protocols; cleaning exam/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control; cleaning sterilizer according to scheduled maintenance program and keeping appropriate records; ordering, sorting, storing supplies; and restocking exam/procedure rooms.

4. Fulfills organizational responsibilities as assigned including respecting/promoting patient rights; responding appropriately to emergency codes; sharing problems relating to patients and/or staff with assigned physician.

5. Fulfills clinical medical assisting responsibilities in accordance with Wisconsin state law, which may include medical/surgical asepsis, sterilization, instrument wrapping and autoclaving; checking vital signs or menstruations; physical examination preparations; clinical pharmacology; drug administration through various routes including injections; prescription verifications with physician’s orders; minor surgery assists including surgical tray set-up pre/post surgical care, applying dressings, and suture removal; biohazard waste disposal and monitoring; therapeutic modalities; instructing patients with assistive devices, body mechanics, and home care; laboratory procedures including Occupational Safety and Health

Administration (OSHA) guidelines; quality control methods; CLIA-waived testing; capillary punctures and venipunctures; specimen handling such as urine, throat, vaginal, stool, and sputum; electrocardiography including mounting, emergency triage, and first aid. Certified Medical Assistants must adhere to the CMA scope of practice in the laboratory.

6. Will assist Receptionist and Lab Director in their duties, in coordination with other CMA’s, during planned or unplanned absences. For Reception, would include answering phones, documenting and scheduling with EMR, checking in/registering patients and general reception area management. For Lab, includes blood/sample collection, preparation of samples for testing and other duties allowed under CLIA waived-testing status.

Position Description
Qualifications and Education Requirements

1. High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED), medical assistant diploma from an accredited vocational institution, or a community college course in medical assisting. Will consider an EMT and/or CNA.

2. Current CPR certification.

3. EPIC experience preferred.

Mental/Physical Requirements
Must be able to use appropriate body mechanics techniques when making necessary patient transfers and helping patients with walking, dressing, etc. Bending, stooping, lifting, folding and typing are all daily occurrences. Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds of supplies. Occasional stress from dealing with a busy clinic schedules and patients.
