Weaving a Better Future
Shortly after the birth of Madison Women’s Health clinic, partner doctor Dr. Beth Wiedel started an initiative, which is named “Weave of Hope®.” The women weave woven products created out of a centuries-old process that has been handed down for generations.
We are proud to support a special initiative in a small, Kaqchikel Maya women’s cooperative in Guatemala. The women of this initiative seek to become more financially independent through the sale of these woven products and, at the same time, teach their younger generations their weaving techniques.
The Kaqchikel Mayan artisans possess a range of skills including sewing, weaving, and embroidery.
All our newly pregnant patients receive a hand-woven bag made by the Maya women of Kaqchikel. The bags are woven entirely on a backstrap loom. The cotton yarns are dyed with natural pigments. Each bag is unique with fine details and craftsmanship.
